About Two Cent Pieces
Calls for an American Two Cent piece began long before the introduction of the bronze piece in 1864. The demand for such a coin would not be fully realized until the closing years of the Civil War and ultimately dwindled over the following decade. The coin, as presented here in this album, has since become a collectible obsolete item representing a significant time in the history of the United States.
The first proposal for the denomination dates back to 1806 while the first pattern or trial piece for a two cent coin was produced in 1836. Congress hesitated on approving the new coin. Calls for the two cent piece were renewed during the Civil War when a severe absence of coinage in circulation brought forth a myriad of bronze tokens that were considered acceptable in commerce.
