Classic Head $5.00

The Classic Head Half Eagle had one of the shortest runs of all type gold coinage however its production occupied a key era in the history of the U.S. Mint. This coin bore witness to the end of the early classical era and the birth of a more modern United States.

Prior to the design’s use, gold coins were produced with infrequence by the Mint in Philadelphia. The Act of 1792 specified gold coins in the denominations of $2.50, $5.00, and $10.00. The value of gold was such that many pieces were exported to Europe and never returned to their homeland. President Thomas Jefferson suspended production of the Eagle in 1804. The Half Eagle remained in modest demand while the Quarter Eagle was not minted between 1809 and 1820.
