About United States Half Cents
The Half Cent is the lowest denomination issued for commerce by the United States Mint. It holds the additional distinction of being one of the first coins minted as well as the first to be discontinued. Five major design types and a private token comprise this series that today is highly appreciated by specialists.
The earliest half cents are dated 1793 and bear the Liberty Cap design with Lady Liberty facing to the left. The design is quite clearly modeled after the Libertas Americana medal that had been commissioned by Benjamin Franklin during a visit to Paris in 1782. Despite a decent mintage for the one-year type, the surviving population amounts to about a thousand pieces.
