A design running a lengthy fifty-four years, the image of Liberty seated on a rock with a shield and holding a cap on a pole was thematic of America in the nineteenth century. Throughout its lifespan, the coin was struck in 0.900 fine silver and measured 17.9mm. Mints producing the design included Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco.
As the value of silver fluctuated, the original weight of 2.67 grams was changed to 2.49 grams in the middle of 1853 and to 2.50 grams in 1873. Arrows were placed at the date in the first few years after these weight changes.
