About Twenty Cent Pieces

There has been no piece with a more brief time in circulation than the United States Twenty Cent coin. Despite calls for the denomination dating back to 1791 and an expressed need by Western settlers of the later 1800s, the coin was the first to be so short-lived.

Spanish reales and two reales were part of the inspiration for this coin. The two bits piece in particular was valued at twenty cents in trade. Such coins circulated widely in the United States until successive Acts of Congress prohibited their use.
