About Two Cent Pieces

Calls for an American Two Cent piece began long before the introduction of the bronze piece in 1864. The demand for such a coin would not be fully realized until the closing years of the Civil War and ultimately dwindled over the following decade. The coin, as presented here in this album, has since become a collectible obsolete item representing a significant time in the history of the United States.

The first pattern for a two cent coin was produced in 1836. A bill to authorize changes in the fineness of silver and gold contained a proposal to create a new two cent piece. It would have had a composition of billon. Unfortunately, the provision was removed from the bill prior to its approval by Congress.
