Coins of Hawaii
The Hawaiian Islands are among the youngest of the Earth’s natural features and only started forming about 28 million years ago. Volcanic activity caused by a singular hotspot underneath the slowly moving Pacific tectonic plate uplifted the basaltic rocks and other material that now form the iconic island chain. The hotspot remains active to the southeast, with continued eruptions on the Big Island.
The first settlers of Hawaii were the Polynesians traveling the wide Pacific Ocean. Their established culture approaches a thousand years in age and is a standout for its unique customs and language. Prior to the visitation of Europeans, the Native Hawaiian population reached about 300,000.
